Welcome To St. Dominic`s Website
By means
of these pages we would like to acquaint you with one of the finest churches in
Valletta (Malta), with its history, with its grandeur, and with its parish
life. This is our fourth year since we went online. I hope you enjoy
your visit and we would be very happy to view your comments in our guestbook.
St Dominics is one of the three parish churches in Valletta, the others
being St Paul Shipwrecked, and St Augustines. It was erected as the first parish in
1571 by the Dominican Pope, Pius V.
Throughout its varied history it has contributed greatly to the advancement of
the local population, thanks to the ever-present community of Dominican
religious aided by various committed lay-people.
This parish boasts of many renowned personalities who were born, baptized and
lived in its confines. Among these special mention must be made of two of the
first three Maltese blessed beatified by the late Pope John Paul II on the 9th
May 2001: Bl. George Preca, founder of the Society of Christian Doctrine
(commonly known as M.U.S.E.U.M), and Bl. Ignatius Falzon. Now we are
very proud that Bl. George Preca has been cannonized.
In spite of its being one of the oldest parishes on the Island, St Dominics
does not miss the opportunities offered by modern means of communication in
order to spread the Gospel. In 1996, the parish began operating a Community
Radio. Now the time appears to be ripe for the launching of this website.
Besides communicating information about the parish, we intend to use this
web-site as another means of bringing the Word of God to the people, a mission
which St Dominic of Guzman made it the essence of the Order of Preachers which
he founded and of which this parish forms part.
